The Berlin Senator for Economic Affairs Ramona Pophat opened the exhibition »Kiezgestein – 90 years Karstadt on Hermannplatz« on the 27th of September alongside Timo Herzberg, CEO Real Estate Germany at SIGNA and owner of Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof. The exhibition uses numerous photographs, original quotations and historical documents to illustrate the exciting 90-year history of Karstadt on Hermannplatz. It covers the »Golden Twenties”, the Nazi era, the various phases of new construction and reconstruction up to the status quo.
»Karstadt on Hermannplatz was much more than a classic shopping location – it was a place to experience, a place that could offer something to everyone,« said Timo Herzberg. »That’s why it quickly developed beyond the city limits into a popular destination for outings for a wide range of clientele and a meeting place for Berliners.«
Ramona Pop added: »The exhibition shows this history in an impressive way. It is therefore important to continue to invest in the Karstadt building in the future to absorb the changes in the environment and the city so that we can jointly write another 90 years of successful company and city history.«
