Our new “Future” information space on the second floor in GALERIA, a new bicycle street through the inner courtyard, the INSEL PALA (formerly the HRMNNBOX), urban gardening and green spaces on former car parks, concerts with local musicians, the “WRKSHOP” bicycle container: with these concrete first steps, we want to test possible future uses and their compatibility with Karstadt and show that changes at Hermannplatz can be good, and they can be for everyone. These steps are prototypes: we look forward to your feedback and new ideas!
COME VISIT US IN THE PALA ISLAND!
We want to shape the future of Karstadt am Hermannplatz and invite all residents, visitors and interested people to drop in and enter into dialogue with us – NOT WITHOUT YOU.
That’s why we’ve created the island of Pala, which opened on March 27, 2021. The Karuna social cooperative wanted to create a place that brings people together and makes encounters possible.
Together we want to discuss how the neighbourhood can be made more attractive, so that it becomes more liveable and includes everyone – even those who have no purchasing power. In addition to shaded areas and vegetable patches, Karuna is reactivating the café and setting up a distribution point for the Karuna Compass. Planned events include readings, workshops on botany, concerts, a small market – all very harmonious and involving everyone who has always been here.
The café is run by Evelyn, Simon and Stavros, who hail from the Greek island of Rhodes and have lived in Berlin for many years. Aside from good coffee, the café serves sandwiches, salads and soups at different prices.

E-CARGO BIKE SHARING WITH AVOCARGO
We offer innovative e-cargo bike sharing at Hermannplatz. To make this possible, we engaged in a cooperation with “Avocargo”. Help yourself to a cargo bike whenever you need one. Just download the app, register and you can head off with your Avocargo bike. It’s an easy, relaxed way to bring your groceries home, for example.

Until the mid of June 2020, on the occasion of its 90th anniversary, you can learn more about the history of the department store in our exhibition: photographs, graphics and even a model of the original building from the 1920s take you back in time.

BIKE CONTAINER WRKSHOP
To contribute something to keeping Berlin and Berlin bikes mobile in the current situation, our WRKSHOP container is open in the inner courtyard of Karstadt on Hermannplatz, directly at the HRMNNBOX. In addition to an automatic tube dispenser, air pumps and an e-bike charging station, you will find two permanently installed assembly stands with tools for the most important repairs.

SHAPING THE FUTURE OF KARSTADT AM HERMANNPLATZ TOGETHER!
We invite all people from Neukölln, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Berlin to join us in developing this vision for a new Karstadt am Hermannplatz. We are firmly convinced that this project offers many great opportunities for residents, businesses and all Berliners. Under the leadership of the respective administration, we would like to see an early participation process to foster genuine participation. It’s the only way to create a sustainable, needs-based and sensible Karstadt ensemble for you at Hermannplatz – AND IT CAN’T HAPPEN WITHOUT YOU!
